Green Arrow

Green Arrow is a vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology. Otherwise known as Oliver Queen, living in Star City as a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist turned outspoken liberal politician. He is the leader of Team Arrow; he has also been a member of the Justice League and the Outsiders.

It’s been a while since I’ve worked on a Super Sunday post so this Green Arrow draft sat in my folder for months where it remained… until now. I was a fan of this character in Smallville (even before I knew who he was) although I wasn’t a big fan of his costume at the time. His gadgets and weapon of choice kind of made up for it though as well as the actor they used to portray him.

Then with the new Arrow series, I’ve been able to watch the first two episodes and I’m liking what I see. David Nutter (who also directed Smallville’s pilot episode) wanted more of a darker undertone for the series – much like the Dark Knight movies – and the new costume certainly fits this idea.

Here’s the one I originally created based on the Smallville model, then later with an updated bow.

But with such a limited choice of bows in the game, I decided to wait until some new designs were added. A while ago, Cool linked this unique ranged weapon model which made me think of Green Arrow again so following the darker and harder-edged version of the new series, I gave it another go. Turns out the design didn’t quite fit with what I had in mind but feeling inspired, I had a play anyway.

Even though he doesn’t appear to have a distinct green tone to his costume in Arrow, I decided to use a brighter piece to finish it off.

My Personal Superhero

As long as I’ve known Coolidge, Batman has always been his favourite superhero. Even when I featured the character as part of my Super Sunday series, he seemed to like my rendition of the superhero I grew up with.

Back in vanilla, there was a particular incident in LBRS (you know, the bit at the start when you jump down onto the ramp to avoid killing some mobs), I was eating dinner while trying to play so I used one finger to jump down but happened to fall through the hole where the ramp is. I yelled SHIT as I ended up falling out of the instance and into the group of orcs below. At the time I wasn’t sure where I was as the others told me to just come back to where they were but the problem was, I wasn’t sure exactly where that was to know where to go from there.

Being the good hunter that I was, I feigned… little did I realise Huga (Cool’s resto druid) had jumped down after me and started healing me. I was so surprised by what he did, it took me a second to react… you see, I was still feigned on the ground while poor Huga was getting all the healing aggro. So I put my fork down, re-summoned my pet and then promptly killed them all, with Huga keeping us up. It was such a sweet gesture and something I still remember after seven years.

I also know in real life he would do the same if I were in trouble so I really wanted to design my own version of Cool as the hero that he loves. Keep in mind that I’ve incorporated some of his features – which is pretty much how his human paladin looked once upon a time.

I tried a lot of variations with his set (not all can be seen here) but the top image was actually pieced together from four different armour shots.

Zatanna

Zatanna is a superhero and one of the greatest magic-users in the DC Universe. Her father is the legendary magician Zatara and she works hard to live up to his legacy. The traditional method of spell-casting she uses involves speaking words and sentences backwards. In addition to her career as a hero, she is also a very notable stage performer.

Initially, I was just going to highlight an item I managed to get yesterday from the Blingtron 4000. I couldn’t believe I finally had a top hat without having to faction and race change a worgen. My first thought was to create a simple High Society outfit, which changed to a magician but after a few screenshots, I thought of Zatanna. Again, a character I got to know from watching Smallville.
