An Unexpected Gift

An Unexpected Gift

After my reflective post yesterday, I’ve been feeling a little melancholic (even though I withheld the worst incidents from the post) but I’d like to thank each and every one of you who left a supportive comment and could relate in some form. As a rule, I don’t usually like to include personal stuff on the blog as I prefer to separate my gaming persona from RL but sometimes it seeps in and you get a glimpse.

Since the patch, I’ve been trying to kill the Haywire Sunreaver Construct for the pet but have only seen it three times. I did manage to loot a key to the solo scenario though which kind of made up for it.

That’s where Veluxia came in. As another avid pet collector (although a more diligent power-leveller than I am), she sent me a Sunreaver Micro-Sentry pet as a gift since she knew I was still missing one.

Sunreaver Micro-Sentry

What a prefect gift for a Blood Elf.

Thank you so much Vel, I absolutely love it!

Now to level it up…

Then Kumineko surprised me later by naming his Panda after me as a thank you.

I’m so glad the guide was so useful. It makes me feel like the hours I spent on it were worth it. :)

Pet Battles Aggression

Pet Battles Aggression

With all the bugs and testing for Pet Battles lately, I’ve found what started as a bit of extracurricular fun has turned into something more. Yesterday, I wrote about the Wild Pets of Cataclysm and how the Twilight Fiendling was the most difficult to capture. What I didn’t mention were the several close calls I had that day. One close encounter involved my last pet which was almost dead and the third aggressive pet which was almost dead. I had won the match but about a second later, my pet had died from dots as I was coming out of the battle so as a result, my captured Twilight Fiendling was lost. A little bit later, it was another really close match but my last pet died before I could get the last hit or so on the other team. This was the same story for a while…

Here’s where I start to feel aggressive – during those kinds of Pet Battles. You know the scene at the end of Karate Kid 2 where the other Sensei commands Johnny to “Finish Him” just before Daniel crane kicks him in the head? I find myself muttering the same thing to my active pet when it’s a particularly tough match or a pet I really want.

If I’m lucky, I might even do a little fist pump on my successful capture :P

The mini patch we had yesterday has done some really wacky things to Pet Battles. Some things are fixed like the higher level pets on capture are now been weakened by 2 levels (as intended). Some of the daily quests are working again and I finally managed to get that worg pet in Howling Fjord. However, I went to Stranglethorn Vale today to see if any baby apes had spawned and they finally had. So having 3 pets ranging from 19-20 in my team and trying to capture a parrot who was only level 9 proved to be difficult as my pets seemed to do no damage after a while. Not only that but my consecutive attempts at trapping (which went to about 15) did not result in a capture but this same level 9 ended up finishing my 3 pets off. Something is obviously very wrong there but you only have to read the forums to see a lot of people are having similar problems.

But again, this is beta so bugs like this are to be expected.

Latest Changes to Pet Battles

Latest Changes to Pet Battles

The last build resulted in a few changes in relation to Pet Battles.

[bluequote author="Mumper" link="" source=""]We have made a few adjustments to the both the weakened by capture pets and the overall XP curve. Details below!

  • Catching any pet level 15 or under retains its current level.
  • Catching a level 16-20 pet will lose 1 level.
  • Catching a level 21-25 pet will lose 2 levels.
  • We have dramatically reduced the XP required to level for pets after level 10.

We have reduced the cool down to 10m in the next build. Don’t forget you can get single use heals in the Sack of Pet Supplies from the Tamer dailies as an alternative to using the Stable Master or your Revive spell.

Finally, the cool-up’s that we added to the heal spells (both the player and stable master) are to deal with exploit cases of players using multiple characters/accounts to avoid cooldowns. We used 3 minutes as a baseline since most players can fly to one in that amount of time from pretty much anywhere on a full speed mount.[/bluequote]

Before I even saw this, I noticed that the pets I was capturing in Outlands were not the level I had fought. This is somewhat annoying in the fact that at the moment, I have been trying to beat the Outlands Grand Master which is a very tough fight in itself as all the Grand Masters use elite pets in their teams. That’s understandable. However, the pets I need to fight in this case are nowhere near that level. This is where the problem occurs.

Now if the reason was due to the fact that they hadn’t implemented the Northrend Battles yet, then I would be ok with that but there has not been such a steep incline in other Grand Master battles as this one. Part of the problem seems to be the limited pets available (if any) at around the 15-24 mark.

The levelling feature was rather fun at first but it’s become a lot like how levelling pets used to be before they made the change to hunter tames which meant that taming a level 10 pet (back in the day) when you were an 60 hunter would mean a lot of grinding to get that pet up to your level.

Today I managed to capture several pets in Cataclysm zones, only to find that my captured pets were downranked FOUR levels as opposed to the intended 2. OUCH!

Other changes include:

  • a third chat tab for Pet Battles
  • Pet quality is now displayed in chat upon successful capture
  • every time I summon my cat, the skin randomises

This is a great change as it’s an easy way to see what quality pet you have.

Edit: The ‘weakened by 2 levels’ feature is now working as intended.

Pet Battles and PVP

Pet Battles and PVP

Some things have been bugging me on the beta lately. I was annoyed to find what almost appeared to be random flagging on a PVE server if you were just working on Pet Battles. I thought this was a bug since you would be flagged flying into Mulgore, for example, but I’ve since read that it’s an intentional feature. Thx to BrokenRavens for bringing this to my attention.

Here’s what Mumper had to say on the matter:

[bluequote author="Mumper" link="" source=""]The fact that players are vulnerable to PvP attacks while in a pet battle is intentional.  However, a couple features that go along with this are not implemented yet.

First off, the exact pet you were fighting when you were broke out of pet battle will be respawned.  Same quality, stats and skin color.  Second, you will get a 3s damage shield that absorbs 50% of incoming damage to help negate the fact that you need time to recover after exiting the pet battle interface.  Both of these will be in for the next build.

We feel its very important to keep the PvP aspect of the game intact and if you choose to play on a PvP server, you will certainly be fighting for those rare spawns. (This rule effects PVE servers as well but only in contested areas.)

I admit, I don’t get bothered too often while battling. In fact, there have only been two occasions.

The other night in Searing George, I was knocked out of my Battle (quite a challenging one due to the level) after a Hunter decided to attack me. All the battles in that zone were particularly challenging due to the lack of suitable pets I had at the time). Tonight while researching my Wild Pets of Outland post, I decided to go AFK while I went to do a few things, paying for the auto-flight from Hellfire to Netherstorm before I left. Normally you would be safe as an auto-flight kicks off the PVP flag but when I came back I saw I was dead outside Area 52. Little did I know, a L85 gnome had killed me and was busy tea-bagging me on my return. If you notice in my previous post, even though I’m currently L87 (I’ve stopped levelling so I can be surprised), I was wearing my Pet Battle set (non-transmog) so he must have felt high and mighty being a low level 85 killing someone when they’re AFK.

When I rezzed, I just buffed myself and gave myself a basic heal. This person (I’m assuming a kid) decided to fly to my rez spot and follow me as I flew all around Netherstorm. When I noticed that he was indeed following me I decided to switch back to my PVE gear and contemplated kicking his ass but to be honest I was feeling quite tired and wanted to get my previous post published. In the end I just blew it off and flew back to Area 52 to check something but I’d had enough for the night and logged out.

I really enjoy putting together these guides and sharing my experiences with whoever cares to read but times like this, the earlier achievements and new captures that I managed to get earlier don’t seem as shiny and new as they were.
