Hearthstone may have officially launched but was I the only one to be surprised by this news? I admit my main interest is WoW but when I started seeing Hearthsteed pics, I decided to find out more about it. For a free game, it can be pretty addictive, especially in the beginning. The day I started playing back in October, I was surprised by all the slick animations and voiceovers.
My first match in play mode turned out to be quite amusing as I was itching to try out a priest deck. Naturally Coolidge battled (or should I say slaughtered) me with his pali deck. Well, it was all still new to me and would never have known the matches took that long if I hadn’t recorded it.
To earn your own Hearthsteed, all you have to do is win three games of Hearthstone in Play or Arena mode. You should then receive your achievement and mount after logging in to WoW. For some, the rewards have been instant, for me… not so much. If you’re having trouble collecting your rewards, you can try restarting the Battle.net launcher and WoW as suggested in the forums but this didn’t work for me until I logged back into Hearthstone and out again.
Here’s what a blue had to say on the forums:
The servers are currently experiencing some delays in regards to picking up the Mount Up! achievement on the World of Warcraft side and we are currently working on it. If you have already earned the Mount Up! achievement in Hearthstone, don’t worry, once the server catches up you will properly receive the Hearthsteed mount on your World of Warcraft account. Please note that the Hearthsteed can only be earned from the Americas region of Hearthstone at this time.
I wasn’t quite sure how fast it would take to win three matches since I literally hadn’t played for months and this ranking system was new to me so I headed into play mode with my trusty priest deck. As the match went on, I felt more and more rusty, which I quickly told Neo as he cheered me on but I was surprised to walk out with a win in my first match. That soon faded when the next few weren’t that evenly matched.
As a fresh rank 25 player, I was surprised to see several rank 23 opponents but that’s the luck of the draw I guess. Neo said it took a while to get his done and that seemed to mirror my experience although I probably shouldn’t have been watching TV while completing my matches. It really didn’t help my concentration (which is why I kept looking over the same cards) but I ended up getting my wins against against a pali and 2 mage decks.
The first match whittled me down to 5 before I started to turn the match around. I’ve never forfeit a match and this is why. Unfortunately, I couldn’t record the second since my HD was full and I couldn’t minimise the game (even in fullscreen mode). By the time I got to the third match, I didn’t even get to use my ability before the match abruptly ended!
When the pegasus model was first datamined, there were two different versions thought to be Alliance blue and Horde red but it appears the red model will be coming later.
Here’s the complete vendor collection which consists of two Darkmoon Mounts (180 tokens each) and six Pets (90 tokens each). There’s also a Darkmoon Rabbit and wolf pet which drop from two Darkmoon Faire bosses. The Darkmooon Eye is a rare drop from challenging Jeremy Feasel
Today I managed to get the double achievement Darkmoon Dungeoneer and Darkmoon Despoiler which involves handing in all nine Darkmoon artifacts. As a result, I was able to buy my second Darkmoon mount. I admit that I caved in and bought ‘A Treatise on Strategy’ for 7K G but it was the last one I needed. Plus, I didn’t want to take any chances just in case the achievement was reset again.
One of the things I was most looking forward to when Patch 4.3 hit was the new Darkmoon Fair. I always made a note of when the Fair would be up as it was a good way to stock up on herbs, leather and other goodies. Reputations are another thing I like to work on and I can’t help but get a sense of satisfaction when I see a band of 999/1000 running down my reputation bar. Unfortunately, I managed to get Exalted prior to the patch when it was a lot more monotonous with the old hand-ins and deck turn-ins.
With the promise of a whole new island to satisfy our love of fun and games, it was the first thing I did when I logged in this morning. In Orgrimmar, you can talk to the Darkmoon NPC who’s located very close to the Flight Master, just look for the Darkmoon banner right next to her. She offers a quest which leads you to the Island. Once there you will receive the Darkmoon Adventurer’s Guide which will allow you to get extra tickets. However, I quickly noticed that she had no quest for me when I logged in. Presumably because I had done the quest when it was offered a long time ago. After some research it was discovered that I could just head over to the island and obtain a Darkmoon Adventurer’s Guide just by speaking to the Information Officer in the left tent just as you enter the Fair.
I must say that the new quests and dailies were a nice change from the old hand-ins you used to do for rep. You can purchase some Darkmoon Game Tokens from Trixi Sharpworth who’s located in her own little tent towards the far end of the main row just before the Deathmatch Pavilion on the RHS. You have a choice of Pouch o’ Tokens (5) or Sack o’ Tokens (25). The new games on offer were the:
- Ring Toss – Land 3 rings on the Darkmoon Turtle. Spamming button 1 since the turtle seems to move in the last sec procs my 4-pc heal set :P
- Tonk Commander – Use your Darkmoon Tonk to destroy 30 Tonk Targets in the time allowed.
- Shooting Gallery – Score 25 points in 60 seconds. You can even earn the Quick Shot achievement.
- Whack-a-Gnoll – Score 30 points by whacking Gnolls. Hit Hogger for 3 pts.
- Human Cannonball * – Accumulate 5 Cannon Target Points by landing near the target. If you think you hit the Bullseye (which awards 5 points and another achievement) wait a few secs for the achievement/quest to register before moving.
- Note to self: When landing in the water and using levitate to get back on land, remember to cancel levitate before you get shot out of the cannon again as you’ll just keep going, and going, and going even after cancelling the wings =/ I ended up hitting fatigue but thankfully didn’t die.
No doubt your kids will get hours of enjoyment from these Sandbox Tigers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the little red arrow to dismount from the tiger, use /leavevehicle
In addition to this, one of the quests Test Your Strength offers you 10 tickets for collecting 250 Grisly Trophies. These were very easy to acquire as Coolidge and I ran the Well of Eternity and managed to get ~60 just from there. Especially the last encounter since the demons that spawn have a chance to give you the items as well. After the dungeon, we headed over to Deepholm to farm the rest of trophies since there are large groups and the mobs respawn fast. We managed to complete our quest in ~15mins or so.
What puzzled us at first was the fact that the number of trophies we each accumulated from killing things seemed to be sporadic and differed in number, even though we were killing the same mobs. After doing some research however, I found that you just have to tag the mob as you normally would for XP, not necessarily get the killing blow.
Also on offer are quests relating to your professions. It’s a great way to get an easy +5pts if you’re still levelling any of your primary or secondary ones – completing all six will even give you an achievement. Speaking of achievements, you can get quite a few, from handing in all the artifacts to sampling all the food and drink on offer. Don’t forget to visit this exotic food vendor on the outskirts of the Faire.
If you’re a fan of the pets, be sure to try to get your Sea Pony from fishing the coastal waters around the island. Not sure if I was just lucky but I managed to get the pet within an hour of fishing. From what I’ve heard in-game and on Twitter, it seems a hotfix may be coming soon.
There are also pools of wreckage along the coast, if you go looking around the island. They offer some nice goodies relevant for 85′s, inc food, potions, ore, cloth, herbs etc.
If you’d like to know some of the back story to the Darkmoon Faire, I suggest listening to The OverLores Podcast. You can also head over to The Daily Frostwolf – Druid Edition to find out more about the ghosts in the area.
After handing in all the quests today, I managed to get 55 tickets in total. This included two of the Artifacts needed for the achievements and extra tickets. I see it’s going to take a while to get all the pets and mounts.
So here’s to the next grind; at least for the next week anyway.
