My Top Ten Companion Pets

10

With so many pets in my collection right now, I wasn’t sure if I could pick ten favourites but I thought I should have a go as there are some that stand out after all these years. Originally proposed by Swenyola here is my contribution in order of play.

1. Tranquil Mechanical Yeti

Back in vanilla, this was a gift from Fatboyflash when he found out how much I liked his and made another.

2. Hyacinth Macaw

I can’t tell you how much time I spent farming the pirates in Stranglethorn so when JKo offered to farm one for me, he wasn’t kidding when he said he was really lucky with pet drops. I still can’t believe he farmed mine in MINUTES!

3. Pandaren Monk

One of many gifts Coolidge has bought for me over the years but may possibly be my favourite. The Celestial Steed comes a close second though, even though it’s a mount.

4. Magical Crawdad

Considering this took FIVE Mr Pinchys to collect, how could I not include it.

5. Sand Scarab

I’ve been lucky to receive a few gifts from Arvash but this may be my favourite after my love of Uldum.

6. Landro’s Lil XT

The venue of one of my weekly hangouts (when I can), this was a Winter Veil gift from Herculano.

7. Guardian Cub

As part of my Secret Santa gift from Angelya last year.

8. Lil’ Tarecgosa

I was so excited about collecting this pet but we never managed to finish it in the Guild but thanks to the generosity of those in Shadow Rising, I can now say I have one.

9. Sunreaver Micro-Sentry

After trying to farm this for a while, Luxy surprised me by telling me she had an extra one.

10. Tuskarr Kite

One of my newest pets, the Tuskarr Kite was a recent birthday present from Navi.

There are a few others which come to mind like the Crimson Whelping which I farmed for weeks during vanilla or the Vampiric Batling dropped by Prince Tenris Mirkblood as part of the Scourge Invasion in 2008.

Thanks to the generosity of all my friends who have helped me on my quest to collect all the non-combat and battle pets over the years.

Day 4 – Pet Battles

7

As part of Navi’s Ten Days of Pet Battles:

Day 4: What was the most epic pet battle/capture you ever had?

There are a few that stick out but not for the excitement value that others have written about, like capturing a rare spawn. On the beta, the Twilight Fiendling had such an annoying ability, capturing one proved difficult. They weren’t that rare to find but there was a lot of angst keeping them alive for the entire battle.

I can’t tell you how many failed attempts I had on this but it was enough.

Onyxia vs Fiendling

Who will be taken out first?

Back then, the Fiendlings had an ability to clone itself (splitting it’s health in half) so essentially it would hit you twice each turn and then often die before you could trap it. How fair is that? So I was happy to see when it came to capturing one on live, the ability was gone.

Twilight Fiendlings

Check out the Fiendling clone ability in action!

Looking through my beta folder, I was excited to find this little nugget.

Speaking of other abilities which were tweaked, the Flayer Hatchling’s reflection ability worked a little differently too. The ability would reflect ANY ability including burrowing and heals so was really OP at the time. I recall doing a battle in the Vale, fairly close to Aki where I reflected the burrowing ability of the enemy pet. This caused my pet to remain underground for the rest of the match. This also happened on the take-off ability which caused you to fly up high, blocking an attack so in fact, my flayer was in mid-air for the rest of the entire match.

The most recent ‘epic’ battle that comes to mind is the tamer battle I had a while ago. Although that was more determination to keep going in the hopes of winning, rather than forfeiting and trying again with a different lineup.

Ah, the memories.

Day 2 – Pet Battles

6

As part of Navi’s Ten Days of Pet Battles:

Day 2:  What pets don’t you like and why?

This is an easy one. There are lots of models I don’t particularly like in-game which have already been discussed in other posts like the frogs and infested bear cub. I’d also have to include spiders and cockroaches to that list even though spiders are very effective to use. Just don’t get me started on trying to get a rare version of those green spiders in Krasarang Wilds. Ekk!

Clock'em

But then there are the ones that are quite unique in their look or ability to collect like Clock’em. For a pet that takes some skill to get, I would have hoped that it had some sort of unique ability that’s well worth the choice for using a mechanical pet, but it doesn’t. The Clockwork Gnome which looks very similar, seems to have a more effective skillset.

Crawling Claw

Another pet would have to be my Crawling Claw which is still one of my favourite looking pets but falls short of the mark in terms of abilities. Even so, it was still the first undead I levelled to full.
