Avengers Assemble

A while ago, I created this Justice League banner after featuring the last original member in my Super Sunday series. It turned out to be pretty popular on both twitter and facebook so I’m posting it here again.

Justice League

I always planned to make one for the Avengers if I ever featured all of the characters but I wasn’t that interested in posting Black Widow or Hawkeye. However, I had still completed a lot of Marvel characters so I figured it may be fun to make a banner just for them.

One of my favourite scenes in the Avengers movie involves the big fight scene where the camera pans around each member so with server maintenance happening, I spent the better part of the evening going through my old costumes and creating a couple of new ones.

I have to say, it turned out a lot better than my previous attempt.

Emma Frost

Having seen January Jones’ character in the latest X-Men film, I have to say I found her character quite cool to say the least. From what I could gather, she’s almost as powerful as Professor X.

Emma Frost ascended to the upper echelon of the business world based on her intelligence, drive, and personal charm. She possesses strong telepathic talents and a flexible organic diamond form which gives her superhuman strength, protects her from most forms of physical injury and able to withstand extreme temperatures. I happened to come across the paladin-only Challenge Mode belt after I had pretty much designed an all-cloth costume but I thought it would make a nice touch since she eventually joins the X-Men. In the end, I used the top half of her costume from the Marvel: Avengers Alliance game on Facebook.

It’s been a while since I’ve had this much fun adding all the elements especially her diamond skin which is similar to what you see in the movie.

For the in-game version of diamond form, the Aqua Jewel comes pretty close though.

Following a recent comment on my Marvel poster below, the Hulk was named as the easiest one to do but since he’s been done before and didn’t pose much of a challenge, I hadn’t planned on doing him. That was until a day ago when I started working on a particular female Marvel character only to keep coming back to this likeable green giant. He’s been named as one of the most powerful Supers out there so I thought it only fitting that I feature him as well.

With such a basic character to dress, I have to say that half the fun is staging and posing the character. It was particularly exciting to see one of my Supers using the updated model (if you don’t count my gnome Wonder Woman a couple of days earlier).

Personally I can’t wait to see the rest of my Supers using these new updated models.

In the meantime, feel free to catch up on the rest of my Super Sunday series.

Iron Man

Anthony “Tony” Stark was born with extreme intelligence. He inherited Stark Enterprises after the death of his parents at age 21. While wounded in a war zone, he built an armored suit that would help keep him alive. Stark played a dual-role with the formation of The Avengers both as the sponsor and, as Iron Man. Originally, Tony Stark had no powers of his own, he depended on his armored suit for all of his super abilities, until he injected himself the Extremis virus and later had an arc reactor implanted in his chest, gaining new abilities and intellect.

Finding pieces which either matched the look or colours of the Iron Man suit proved quite difficult. Some of the best coloured pieces didn’t necessarily look like plate while others matched the look but didn’t offer much of the same vivid colour. I experimented between a lot of plate and mail pieces before I decided on this final design.

Iron Man

I might have to redo all these Supers once the models are updated.

Logan possesses memories of being a Samurai in Japan, a mercenary operative for the Central Intelligence Agency, and a “wild man” in the Canadian wilderness. Due to extensive memory implants given to Logan through the Weapon X program, any or all of these memories are suspect. Logan has at least one memory of meeting Captain America (Steve Rogers) in World War II while he was in the Canadian Army which has been verified as true. Sometime after World War II, Logan was taken by a group of scientists led by Dr. Cornelius as part of the Weapon X program. Cornelius was hired to perfect and use a technique that would bond the indestructible element adamantium to human bone cells. Logan’s skeleton was bonded to the adamantium, and he was indoctrinated into the Weapon X assassin program.

Ah, Wolverine and Hugh Jackman – what a great combination. Leather just seemed fitting for a Wolverine outfit but I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off so I looked at all armour types (just in case).

It was hard to find any yellow pieces to use – short of using plate – and wolf helms were too cheesy. In the end, I made a compromise between his classic wolverine costume (second image above) and a more recent one. When finalising the set in WMV, I found a weird bug with the left fist weapon causing it to appear backwards like two right-handed fist weapons. Thankfully this was easily fixed in Photoshop.

Only leather pieces were used – short of any shoulders for a complete transmog.

Martian Manhunter

I’ve been meaning to do this guy for a while now, especially since I’ve published the other founding members of the Justice League but one thing stopped me – the male orc model. As with other Supers, I’ve created his body using a number of layers. I think he currently wins the record for most layers used. I was hoping to use Thrall’s updated model in WMV but since he’s listed as an NPC, I couldn’t change his armour so after playing around with a few of the poses, here’s what I’ve come up with.

Martian Manhunter, also known as J’onn J’onzz and John Jones, is a superhero from the planet Mars and the last surviving member of his race. A martian holocaust killed his wife and daughter, nearly driving him mad, until he was brought to Earth in an accident caused by scientist Saul Erdel. His natural abilities include super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability, flight, shape-shifting, intangibility and telepathy.

Whatever I know about his character (and many others) I learnt from Smallville. Super episodes were always some of my favourites to watch. It’s a shame Batman and Wonder Woman didn’t make it into the series though.

Smallville Martian

His costume is almost made up entirely of cloth.
