Archaeology in Legion

In Legion, a new archaeologist can head to the Broken Isles and level up the profession from scratch. The archaeology trainer in Dalaran can teach you the next level of archaeology or you can loot the Excavator’s Notebook from a dig site or spawned mob – even as a novice.

Things to note:

  • Three active dig sites will be up at all times
  • Many dig sites are now markedly smaller
  • Each location may be surveyed 9 times (offer 5-19 fragments and 1 skill point)
  • As soon as you hit that sweet spot on a survey, a shovel appears
  • You can hold up to 200 fragments per race
  • There are only five common solves per race
  • Rare artifacts now come from quest rewards
  • Common solves give +5 skill points
  • Rare solves give +10 skill points

At max level, the Archaeology Trainer will offer a new quest every couple of weeks to aid a famous adventurer. You will need to complete the current questline within that fortnight or your active quest will be removed and all progress lost – meaning you won’t see the quest again for another 6 months.

The rewards look fantastic. This is a really good job and a service, which I appreciate. Personally, I lost interest in Arch during WoD and only did the minimum to sustain my max level — adventuring with a goal is much, much better.

I will totally be referring to this on Reins of Azeroth

hello, i’m totally new to the archeology trade, and I have a couple questions:
when you start archeology on the Broken Islands do you have to level it up from 1 to 800? And one more thing: My archeology is at 150-200 ish and I’m not able to pick any quests from Bran or the Archeology lady on Dalaran. Someone please, help! Really want to get the quest “This Side Up” down!

You can level it from scratch but since you’re already 150+, you’ll just continue from that skill level. You will only see her quest once you’ve reached 110.

Hello how do i know where the dig sites are i keep trying to survey but it keeps telling me I cant survey there. Also whats the addon which shows the digsite locaction yon some of your youtube videos on your main map.

    November 24, 2016 at 1:02 pm

That’s the default UI. Unfortunately, Blizz changed the way dig sites appear on the world map so you only see shovels which are harder to pick up with all the other icons. Just make sure ‘Show Digsites’ is selected in the upper RH corner of the World Map and you have previously learnt archaeology from the trainer.

Archaeology starter here, currently in Val’Sharah surveying my ass off but not finding anything.
Do I have to go back to a lower level zone and level my skill up, or doesn’t it matter and I can go on digging on Broken Isles on skill lvl 1?

    August 16, 2017 at 10:03 am

Yes, you can start surveying right here in the Broken Isles and level up just from digging Legion zones. Projects generally take longer to complete so it will take more fragments to complete each artifact. Just remember to pick up the new archaeology quest each fortnight (assuming you’re already 110) for some cool rewards – see list above.

I’m already a maxed 800 archy and have been since its introduction. Am disappointed that there is no decent 900+ GEAR or decent mounts. No legendary items etc. In fact archy has been behind the curve since its conception. I’m asking blizzard why and no reply.
My question is why bother ?
Toys pets silly looking mounts and one or two 5000g items. It’s not enough. This profession needs a huge boost to bring it into the game and make it worthwhile.
Make it hard! I don’t care.. groups of archy toons needed to dps down a dragon to release gear or items etc.
Just disappointed nowt to loot of worth in a raid or dungy..

I agree. Archaeology seems more like a chore even though I’m a completionist and like to do the achievements. There’s one more pristine left and I’m wondering if it’s tied to the 250 dig site achievement because if it is, I have at least 40 dig sites to go. I actually didn’t mind the pet and mount rewards and the elite mobs you can summon broke up the monotony a bit but they are still soloable for slightly more rewards.

I would love to at least see them add some grid dig sites like a reverse jigsaw so when you start a new dig you at least have an idea of what you’re uncovering. Not to mention the pet design I posted a few years ago.

Some sort of group summon would be good though. I just don’t think it’s likely to happen.

Having trouble finding the answer to this question, wondering if you might know. Do you have to be Level 100 for digsites to show up in Broken Isles? I’m 96, but with level 700 Arch — wondering if I could go to Broken Isles early and start digging. I’m guessing No, and nothing shows up on my main map, but was wondering if you had any insight.

    March 3, 2018 at 11:20 pm

I’m a little unsure since the item needed to level up archaeology only requires level 90 but I think you have to wait until 98 until you can actually get to the Broken Isles and witness the teleportation of Dalaran, etc.

Also, double check the main map. Hit the magnifying glass to make sure “show dig sites’ is checked.
