Thor: God of Thunder

When Marvel teased us with an all-new thundering title in July, it became quite the controversial topic. “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR,” wrote Jason Aaron, the author of the new comic series. “This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

According to series editor Wil Moss, this is not the first time a female has picked up the hammer. There’s an X-Men story where Storm picked up the hammer. He further explains “The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription. The new Thor continues MARVEL’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy.”

Even with a couple of months between the announcement and the release, there’s still a lot of resistance to this change of gender. Axel Alonso, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief said “Thor is unable to pick up the hammer [but] one of the women in Thor’s life picks up the hammer. She is in fact worthy. And she becomes Thor.”

But who could she be?

Perhaps Lady Sif, Jane Foster or even Thor’s sister Angela although Marvel offered some interesting options. I would imagine the series needs time to develop as they explain how Thor became unworthy and why a woman now wields the hammer.

All you have to do is look at this fantastic photo manipulation by Josh McMahon to see how cool she could potentially look while I covet my own superhero costume as Wonder Woman. (Well, I did dress up as Catwoman once but that was years ago. Hey, what can I say, I’m a DC girl!)

However, with Chris Hemsworth still under contract for three more Marvel films, we may not be seeing a female version any time soon, especially since the latest Avengers movie is due out next year. However, rumours revealed he’s not too keen to get back in shape and there was this tweet from a certain director.

If this tweet is anything to go by, we may be seeing a new one sooner than we think.

Now this wouldn’t be a super post without my own interpretation so here she is with a slightly more impressive cape.

Thor female

For those interested, here’s the original post which is part of my Super Sunday series.

Thx for the idea BBB.

  1. But I’m more like Wonder Woman aren’t I? :P
I guess if I have to cross franchises, I could be Thor… or maybe Melinda May :)
